Cairo
The name "Cairo" is said to be derived from the Arabic
Al-Qahira, the victorious. According to legend, the planet Kahir
- or Mars - was visible on the night of the foundation of the city.
Cairo has two nuclei, the original area of settlement of the Arabs
in the south west now called Misr El-Qadimah (Old Cairo), the older
areas with their traditional tenements surrounding a central courtyard,
and the later enclosed town of Al-Qahirah. Cairo, a fascinating
city, holds something for everyone.

Sphinx of Giza, Memphis and Saqqara, The Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo. |

Luxor
Luxor is the world's greatest outdoor museum, the centre for some
of the most magnificent remains of Pharaonic Egypt. Luxor means
"palaces" and the city was known to the ancient Greeks
as Thebes. It was said that Thebes was not only the most beautiful
but the stateliest city in the world. Luxor is actually three towns
in one - the commercial centre of Luxor on the East Bank of the
Nile, Karnak, the immense temple complex, and the Theban Necropolis
on the opposite West Bank.

- Valley of Kings and Queens, Madinat Habu and Ramesseum, and The
East Bank - Karnak and Luxor Temples. |

Egypt's Red Sea coast runs from the Gulf of Suez to the Sudanese
border and is part of a great rift extending from the Dead Sea in
Israel to the Rift Valley in Kenya. At the Sinai Peninsula, it forks
to form the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. The Red Sea, one
of the world's best preserved and most spectacular underwater paradise,
has unique beauty. It is home to some 1,000 species of fish, some
of which are unique to these waters, and 150 different species of
coral.
