Wow! Wow! Wow! is all we kept saying on our fabulous educational trip to Botswana with Belmond Safaris. Our first stop was Eagle Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta and while the Delta is quite dry at the moment, it makes for sensational game viewing!
We were greeted at the luxurious lodge by the wonderful staff singing us a welcome song, while elephants and hippos grazed in the background. We were super lucky on our game drives here (well, actually every game drive!) and we saw a mother rhino with her baby, lions, elephants, all the antelopes and stunning birds. The only thing we missed out on was the elusive leopard and the rare wild dogs, but we knew we still had plenty of chances. A few of us took part in an amazing scenic helicopter flight which we recommend as a must do! To see all the animals and rivers from above is mind blowing.
Next we flew by light aircraft to Savute Elephant Lodge, which lives up to its name, as they have a waterhole in front of the lodge where elephants visited constantly. It was here we found our elusive leopards who were not elusive at all, but walking right next to our vehicle. We were also extremely lucky to see a pride of lion hunt a warthog! It was so amazing to see them stalk, ambush and succeed in their quest. We got up close while they devoured their meal while the vegetarians in the group blocked their ears!
Our last stop was Khwai River Lodge which was a refreshing change of scenery, as it was very green and made for gorgeous photos. A plethora of hippos made their home in front of the lodge. You could sit on the deck with your G & T watching them all day. We had one last animal to find – the wild dogs! We watched them hunt which was fascinating, though they did not succeed.
Overall Belmond Botswana really delivered with the quality of accommodation, game viewing, guides and staff. More than a few of us stated that this was the best trip we had ever been on!
