This itinerary is designed for travellers who want to visit the northern historical and religious attractions and UNESCO World Heritage listed sites including the spectacular Simien mountains.

Day 1: Half day city tour
Arrive in Addis Ababa. On arrival, transfer to the hotel. Addis Ababa is the third highest capital in the world and one of the largest cities in Africa. In the afternoon, take a sightseeing tour of Addis Ababa that includes the National Museum with its many archaeological and historical findings. Continue to Trinity Cathedral, a beautiful church with a baroque style of European architecture which is unique to both Ethiopia and Africa.

Day 2: Blue Nile Falls
Fly to Bahir Dar. Transfer to the airport and fly to the lake side city of Bahir Dar then check in to your hotel. In the afternoon, visit the Blue Nile Falls, considered by many as one of the most spectacular falls in Africa.

Day 3: City tour and Lake Tana Monastery
Head out on Lake Tana to the Zege Peninsula and its famous monasteries. While on the boat, keep an eye out for a variety of bird species and the traditional tankwa crossing the lake. After a short hike through local villages and coffee farms, arrive at the monastery of Ura Kidane Meret, home to an important collections of crosses and crowns dating back to the 16th century. The second monastery we visit is Azwa Maryam. In the afternoon, take a city tour of Bahir Dar for its interesting market and nice view from Bezawit Palace.

Day 4: Simien Mountain National Park
Leave Bahir Dar and drive to head to Sankaber—the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park—passing rural villages and crossing mountain passes with stunning vistas. Visit the park then spend the afternoon, walking near your lodge to spot the endemic Gelada baboon.

Day 5: Simien Mountain National Park
Depart on a day hike with picnic lunch for Chenek where it’s possible to spot the endemic, Walia Ibex. The hike allows you to explore the pinnacles, valleys, gorges and wildlife of this region.

Day 6: City tour of Gondar
Drive to Gondar to visit the former village of the Felasha (African Jews) who have migrated to Israel. Spend the afternoon exploring the Royal Enclosure and its buildings. The fortress, which is surrounded by a wall, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other royal buildings of interest include the library of Emperor YohannesI, the House of Song, the banquet hall of Emperor Bakaffa, the palace of the king’s wife, the nearby bath of King Fasiledes and the Church of Debre Birhan Selassie, with its brightly coloured ceilings.

Day 7: Churches of Lalibella
Fly to Lalibela, arguably one of the most important religious and historical sites in Africa and the Christian world. There are no less than 200 churches in the Lasta Region of Lalibela, some hidden in enormous caves. These brilliant feats of engineering and architecture are often referred to as the “Eighth wonder of the world”. Legend has it that King Lalibela was exiled in Jerusalem and returned to Ethiopia to build a new Jerusalem. In the afternoon, visit the first group of the churches which represent the earthly Jerusalem including Bete Medhanialem (Saviour church), Bete Miriam, Bete Denagel, Bete Meskal, Debra Sina and Bete Golgotha.

Day 8: Churches of Lalibella and Cookery event
Lalibela [BLD]. In the morning, visit the Second group of the churches representing the heavenly Jerusalem. In this group are Bete Gabriel & Raphael, Bete Merquorios, Bete Emmanuel, and Bete Abba Libanos. Finally, visit the most interesting crossshaped church of Bete Giorgis (St. George), which is said to be the symbolisation of Noah’s Ark. The cruciform-shaped Bete Giorgis is the most beautiful church herewith interiors dominated by depictions of Saint George killing the dragon. In the afternoon, visit a family in Lalibela to experience Ethiopian cooking and a coffee ceremony.

Day 9: Merkato + Farewell Dinner
Transfer to Lalibela airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. Visit Merkato, the largest open-air market in Africa. Here you will be presented with a confusing, but fascinating glimpse of the vast range of goods and artifacts available from all parts of the country and you will enjoy the Ethiopian trade exchange tradition in the open air. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner party in one of the traditional restaurants in Addis Ababa to end the tour.
